This is the Jamaica Bay map, showing many of the "named" locations. Jamaica Bay is dominated by the two
ponds (West and East) and the trails around them, but also features some good scrub and limited woodland
(especially the North and South Garden). The West Pond has a trail that surrounds it (and also runs through
the North and South Gardens) and is walkable year round. The short Terrapin Trail branches off that and
leads to an overlook over the bay - it is no longer possible to walk all the way around the Terrapin Trail
due to erosion. The East Pond is walkable only in July-Sept when it is drawn down to attract shorebirds.
At other times there's an overlook from the midpoint near Big John's Pond and some trails run through the
gardens on the west side of the East Pond near Big John's Pond. Access to the pond itself in season
is from the north or south ends (trail entrances marked). The East Pond can be muddy, in fact dangerously so.
When the pond gets low enough, there are two spits of mud that jut out into the East Pond near the North
Island. Most of the year they are submerged, and their existence is only transitory.
